In this half-day tour we will take you to Marathon. Marathon is a town in Greece, the site of the battle of Marathon in 490 BC, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. The tumulus or burial mound  of the 192 Athenian dead, also called the “Soros”, which was erected near the battlefield, remains a feature of the coastal plain. The Tymbos is now marked by a marble memorial stele and surrounded by a small park.

“The name “Marathon” comes from the herb fennel, called marathos in Ancient Greek, so Marathon literally means “a place full of fennels”

The official distance of the race is 42,195 kilometers (26 miles 385 yards). Marathon race is named after the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens.

marathon

The Marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, though the distance did not become standardized until 1921. More than 800 marathons are contested throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes.
